| Two decades ago there were hardly any Newspapers for rural people with low education levels. The ediom content and language of mainstream print media was alien to rural readers. The bulletins of NGOs were mostly eulogizing about their programmes, they were often sermonizing them. The Government bulletins were either advertizing their schemes and programs in a way so that only one sided picture was presented or some of them were also making mockery of their readers plight and blaming them for their deprivation, In this context we realized that rural people also need a free press like all other urban educated readers. With this understanding this monthly rural newspaper especially for women and other marginalized communities was initiated.
The objective was to build positive self image and leadership quality in rural women specially those who are working with rural and urban poor women. Motivating rural women and youth to send news of their area.. Demystify the notion of journalism and journalistic capabilities. Awareness building about various programme and policies. Giving voice to people's struggles and protests on the issues of human rights and social justice. Thus strengthening Democratic processes is the main thrust of this news paper. While doing this we critique objectively the implementation of various programmes and policies, Government's proclamations and ground realities. It's contents are, all the relevant issues that were affecting their lives especially the lives of women and marginalized sections of the society. Namely atrocity, human rights, social justice, struggles and movements, self governance, information about various acts, policies and programmes etc. Besides this news from village of Rajasthan get special coverage. In nutshell it covers all contemporary global to local issues that effect the lives of our readers.
Ujala chhadi is a registered newspaper under the registrar newspapers of India since 1993. The most important aspect of this newspaper is that it has been published without any project funding and commercial advertisements with the subscription of our subscribers and small donations from our well wishers from time to time. The subscription of this newspaper is Rs. 50 annually. Rupees 500 for life and Rs. 1000 /- (one thousand) for special membership.
